No. According to the Self Containment Standards, acquiring a Self Containment certificate requires presenting the vehicle to either two testing officers or one officer who meets the necessary requirements. We understand this to mean that the vehicle must be physically present for inspection, as a video call would not comply with the regulations. This is stated in section 14.1 (b) of the standards under the reference NZS 5465:2001.
The regulations have recently been updated, and we will no longer be providing new self-containment certificates for vehicles with portable toilets. However, if your vehicle already has a portable toilet and a self-containment certification, it will remain valid until the expiration date as indicated on the window card.
We can provide advice on suppliers of fixed toilets and plumbing accessories to help you meet self-containment specifications for your vehicle. If you need installation services, we have worked with many providers throughout the country and would be happy to send our recommendations.
Self-containment refers to a vehicle's ability to manage its own waste and water needs without relying on external facilities. This includes having a fixed toilet, fresh and grey water storage, and a sink. Being self-contained allows you to camp in designated freedom camping areas across New Zealand, often free of charge. Without proper certification, you may be restricted from these areas and could face fines.
If your vehicle doesn't meet the self-containment standards during the inspection, you'll receive a detailed list of required modifications. Once you've made the necessary changes, you can schedule a re-inspection. Some providers offer free re-inspections, so you only pay once for the certification process.
A vent is essential for your grey water tank to prevent pressure build-up and facilitate proper drainage. The vent should be at least 10mm in diameter and extend above the vehicle's flood line, terminating outside the vehicle. This setup ensures safe and efficient waste management.
While self-containment stickers were previously used to indicate a vehicle's status, they are no longer a legal requirement. The current system relies on a national register of self-contained vehicles, which enforcement officers can access online. However, displaying a sticker can still be helpful for quick identification and may promote responsible camping practices.
The inspection itself typically takes about 30-45 minutes. After a successful inspection, you'll receive your self-containment warrant card and certificate, usually within 15mins. If your vehicle requires modifications, the timeline will depend on how quickly those changes are made and re-inspected.
Yes, many certification providers offer mobile inspection services or can arrange for inspections at various locations. It's best to contact your chosen provider directly to discuss available options and any additional fees that may apply.
To be certified as self-contained, your vehicle must have:
These requirements ensure that your vehicle can manage waste and water needs for at least three days without external assistance.
